Thick, smooth (easy peasy) chocolate custard from scratch.

Its chilly outside and you're in the mood for something warm, rich and comforting..what could be more comforting than a bowl full of temptingly smooth, thick chocolate custard?

Just what you fancy, eh?

Here's a recipe that's super easy and better yet, doesn't require any ingredients that will mean you need to take a trip to the shops.

Your ingredients list (serves one):
  • 250ml milk
  • 3 egg yolks
  • Good quality hot chocolate powder
  • 2 tsp corn flour
 The method:
  • Tip your milk on to a pan and heat it on a low-medium heat, stirring continuously, until it looks like its almost about to simmer.
  • Remove from the heat
  • Add however many tablespoons of hot chocolate powder to the milk, that you would normally use in a mug of hot chocolate. Taste. If it needs more chocolate, go ahead and add some more.
  • Whisk the egg yolks in a bowl for about a minute.
  • Add two teaspoons of cornflour to your eggs and whisk again, making sure you get rid of any lumps of flour/ any specks of white.
  • Add a few tablespoons of the warm chocolate mixture to your eggs and mix again, until its all incorporated. Pour in to the pan containing your milk.
  • Put the pan back on to a LOW heat, and whisk continuously. It may take a while, but eventually, I promise, the mixture will start to thicken (exciting!). When you think its the right consistency of custard for you, remove from the heat, pour in to a bowl, and enjoy your delicious creation.

If you want a bit of variation on flavor, you could add some vanilla extract to the chocolate custard, or make it entirely vanilla flavored (just don't forget to add sugar). Another option is to add rum, or orange zest. The possibilities are endless!
